You may be wondering, what is Ecosia? Have you stumbled upon it on ads or maybe by a fellow eco-warrior that wants to promote the eco-lifestyle? Maybe you just happened to stumble upon the topic on my blog. Either way, I’ll give you a brief rundown of what Ecosia is and why you should use it.
You know what Google does, right? Ecosia does that too, it searches the web for relative content based on the keywords you enter. The only difference there is, the earnings Ecosia makes go to tree planting activities around the world! But wait, you might ask, how does Ecosia earn?
Search engines, like Google, Bing, and Ecosia, earn by displaying ads when you press enter after you enter a keyword into their search bar. Notice how you see sponsored links on the topmost part of the results page? They earn every time someone clicks on those links, or when the ads are displayed often enough. They’re very transparent with how they handle their money, so much so that you can view their financial reports!
Who would’ve thought we’d reach that day and age that surfing the web could help save our planet? Now you can, simply download the extension to your browser or make it your default search engine on your preferred browser and start planting trees. Let’s help Ecosia reach 1 billion trees planted!
Also when you start using it, you can track the number of trees you’ve planted by checking out this nifty little indicator on the upper right side of the screen with a tree icon. Every 45 searches you plant a tree! I’ve managed to search on Ecosia for about 365 times now, that equates to around 8 trees! Not bad for someone who’s always online!
